"Great Stay for our young family"

   24-05-2018
Review from toronto traveling the last week of April as a family of 4 (two adults age 30 with two kids ages 7 months and 2.5 years) Normally I don’t review the places we have been but this time we thought we should as it was just such a different trip- one that we hope one day you will experience too. My husband and I love to travel- been on cruises, all inclusives, traveled Europe but obviously as a young family the needs change. I am on mat leave so we wanted to get away but just didn’t know how we wanted to spend the money on travel and I like to say we nailed it. We are busy bodies so sitting on a resort all week just wasn’t what we wanted for this trip. If we were to say our most important things for a place: good food, nice beach, access to different activities/experiences- this place was it. Highlights: the food at the resort is wonderful- never have to worry a second about getting sick or drinking the water. It is a bit more expensive but not crazy- maybe 20 usd for lunch meal. The breakfast buffet is great- something for everyone and the Saturday night bbq buffet was also great. It was $40 per person but you have tons of salads and all the meat and potatoes you can think of. Kids were free. We often ate breakfast in our room and got groceries from the nearby Anna’s market- literally a 5 min walk. Picture it as a gas station convience store - we got milk, cereal, peanut butter, jam, juice. There is a bigger store probably 15-20 min away but never ventured that way. The beach was beautiful- warm, not crowded and easily swim in and out of it. Lots of shade and plenty of chairs for everyone. The streets are safe to walk during the day- didn’t think twice as there is lots of people walking and touring around as it is a cruise port. We were however recommended to not walk at night - plenty of people do but as a young family we didn’t. We can afford the $15 taxi ride for peace of mind and quick travels back to the hotel. Our youngest traveled in her car seat and the 2.5 year old just sat in a regular taxi seat. The roads are all small one ways so we didn’t worry about not having a seat for her. We enjoyed walking to punda (took us 20 min with a stroller). We often walked eighth on the road and the sidewalks don’t have easy ramps up and down. We often ate in punda- lots of great restaurants. The one is the square was great for a young family as it had 1/2 price drinks before 6 and something for everyone. Usually our dinner would be $40 with 3 meals, and plenty to drink. We love how many places you can walk to around here to grab food and defiantly don’t have to eat just at the resort (although always tasty) We took a cab to the aquarium one day ($15) and then walked to mambo beach. We loved them both! We were suggested to not take the bus with a stroller which was fine- as we didn’t have to wait and also once you pay $2:person for the bus you mine as well get a taxi. While the downfalls are not many these are things to consider: not any night life- this was fine for us as we put the kids down and had drinks on the balcony, not many young kids but that was fine just I would recommend bringing some toys for the beach. If I were to do it again I would ask for a main floor room but that’s just because of our needs. We have two kids that take naps and once they were down we would sit on the balcony- while we had a stellar view of the ocean it would be nice to sit with my husband or switch spots with him if needed. Also it would be recommended to put up railings for better water safety. It was not a problem for our family but made me nervous at times. Overall a great trip. Costs us a bit more than an all inclusive but would do it again and again.

"Breakfast and Grill"

   22-05-2018
I have been visiting this hotel for a nice breakfast for several times now. I really like it. The quietness of the place, the sound of the waves, the coffee and the friendly waiters that attend during the morning. My first time breakfast was 2 years ago or my birthday and since then I keep coming every now and them. A nice buffet with differs selection and at a good price. It is a combination of American and Continental breakfast. Next to my quiet times of breakfast I also discovered the great Caribbean Grill nights on Saturday. A large variety of neat, salads, side orders and desserts. Not to mentioned the great Pan music that make it feels more Caribbean. It is a great activity for a Saturday night and good food. I love to attend and to compare the quietness of the morning turning into the musical Saturday evening. Worth visiting.

"Outstanding Hotel"

   20-05-2018
This was our first visit to Curaçao and Avila Beach. The hotel was outstanding. The service, amenities and food were all top notch. We were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and couldn’t have picked a better place. Thank you for making our vacation one that we will always cherish. We cannot wait to come back.

"It's Complicated"

   16-05-2018
I'm usually very decisive about whether I like or dislike a vacation lodging choice. The Avila has me shaking my head and I hope management monitors Trip Advisor, because I think they have an opportunity for improvement here. I chose Avila over Lions Dive based on some review comments. Also, I took a chance on the picture of the rooms in the Blues Wing and was not disappointed. The views, particular on the odd number side of the Blues Wing is incredible. The hotel is small and quiet which I was looking for as well. The staff around the grounds of the hotel and the housekeeping staff were helpful and friendly. The grounds and our room were well kept and the room was plenty spacious. There are several good restaurants within walking distance as well. For the downsides: 1. The room's air conditioning we believe is on some sort of timer so no matter what you set it on, after a certain amount of time it just reverts back to 26 C degrees. 2. If you are from the U.S. take a voltage converter even though the website says they accomodate both - we had to borrow one from the front desk as there was one plug that was in a useless area. 3. There is a refrigerator in the room, but it is the smallest refrigerator I've ever seen, no a wine bottle will not fit in it. 4. A lot of people won't care about this - but there are no wash clothes to be had, only bath towels and hand towels. 5. They do not put a sheet between the fitted sheet and duvet, we snatched one off a housekeeping cart since the air conditioning kept resetting and we couldn't sleep with the duvet on us because it was too hot. 6. The restaurants (we did not eat at the Pen or breakfast) were very lacking in food quality and service. At Schooner's the service is horrible and they act like they don't care if you order anything. We had lunch on our last day there out of convenience and they never brought my husband's beer he ordered with lunch but then tried to charge us for it. See food reviews. 7. There is no place to get ice on the property unless you want to take your room's ice bucket to the beach bar to get it filled multiple times a day. 8. Our last impression as we were leaving earlier today was of the hospitality room we used and the transportation service. - The hospitality suite we used had NO hot water and NO air conditioning. There was barely any lighting in the bathroom and the shower did not drain. - Two days ago I stopped by the front desk to confirm transport to the airport (we had included pickup when we arrived and wanted to double check departure) the girl behind the desk indicated our transportation did not include round trip, I inquired about the price differential between the taxi or the shuttle, she couldn't tell me. She suggested I come back later in the day. I blew it off and decided we would just take a taxi. When we got done in the hospitality suite and went to leave, we were informed the taxi we ordered was outside but we were also on the list for the shuttle! By this point I just shook my head, felt bad for the taxi driver and said we will just take the taxi. All in all, I think this is a beautiful property with a ton of potential - they need to get some staff in the restaurants that actually want to work and serve people and it seems they need some overall training on the property. Also, we would have loved to have stayed on property and eaten more but the food was just so average for the price we forced ourselves off property for almost all out meals.

"Nice hotel, clean, beachfront, but nothing special "

   15-05-2018
Upon arrival I was not greeted with a smile. Day one of being in curaçao and I was reminded of how unfriendly everyone was in Jamaica, hoping it wasn’t going to be like this. But shortly after, my mind was changed. The staff on premises at the restaurants and bars are extremely friendly. They made dining there lovely, because the food was otherwise bland. The breakfast, $20 US was worth it, it wasn’t spectacular but more than I expected. Juice and coffee/latte station, fruit and yogurt station, egg and omelette station (made to order), hot area with waffles, pancakes, potato, and breakfast meats, wide variety of breads, and a deli station with meats, cheeses, tuna, and veggies. I was “upgraded” on arrival to the octagon building. 2nd floor. Was a nice room. Clean. But noisy on the first night from the bar. So I made a request for a room change and I believe her name was “helenese” was not nice about it. “Well where do you want to go?” Was her response. She ended up moving me to the 4th floor, other side of the building, room 414, and everything about it was much better, much quieter and better views. The fridge in the first room also didn’t work and this one did... a plus! The best part about this place is the gym. I’m a dedicated weight lifter.. this gym had pretty much everything I need for my complete workout, with an ocean view! It was one of the best hotel gyms I’ve used. The beachfront was nice, but the public beaches on the west side of the island are much nicer. The beaches on this side are like barricaded in by rocks, making designated areas for each hotel. Didn’t like it. Felt closed in. Didn’t spend any time at this beach because of it. The hotel restaurants have boring “resort” menus. Not for me. Pictures of the room are from room 414
