Over Allegro Hotel

"Best Hotel in Chicago~!"
The staff were out of this world. We don't know the ends and outs of Chicago, the staff helped us navigate our way around with many different forms of transportation, they gave us ideas of where to go and what to do. The lobby area is amazing and has lots of separated sitting rooms so you can go and visit with a larger group, but yet you still feel as if you are alone in a room. Our experience with this hotel was above and beyond any experience I have had with a hotel. They go above the rest! I would encourage anyone staying downtown Chicago to check this hotel out! Not only was the hotel amazing but the location is just about perfect for a short walk to a lot of places downtown. 30 minute walk to Navy Pier, 15 minute walk to Union Station, 10 minute walk to the river walk off of Wacker! Great Great place to stay!
"Fantastic, ultra-chic hotel with lots of extras"
From the helpful staff (they really go above and beyond to make your stay memorable) to the amazing free happy hour and complimentary coffee, tea and hot cocoa bar in the a.m., I wish I could live at the Hotel Allegro. The Hot Toddy drink at happy hour was beyond delicious, and it was also fun to mingle with the other guests. The lobby and common spaces are so comfy and amazing and the rooms are comfy yet trendy. Kimpton Hotels are my favorite hotels to stay in, I love them all so much. Joining their loyalty program is a must (you get lots of perks, like a drink or raid-the-minibar credits), plus being a member allows you to snag rooms for $99 per night at properties like the Allegro! I'm already planning another visit!
"Impossible to sleep because of noisy radiator, smelly, damp--AVOID!!!"
Don't do it. There are plenty of hotels, many cheaper. But spend more so you don't have to put up with the old radiators. They are so noisy, whether on heat or cool, that it is impossible to sleep. Windows don't open, so you need to have the radiator on all night. Additionally, the hotel need updating and smells of damp. And the rooms are small. And breakfast is very, very expensive, and crap ($25 per person?). A/C noise is terrible on floor 17!!! Staff nice, but avoid!
"Lovely hotel "
This is a lovely hotel in terms on ambiance. The rooms are on the small side but certainly serviceable and in good repair. The restaurant attached to the restaurant is also quite nice and the hotel staff are terrific, they managed to check me in at 8am before a 10am business meeting I had (tip - if you are early at the airport call to the hotel and see if they can hold a room for you, when I called there were only 2 available and they gladly held one for me for early check in). Only complaint is the very slow moving elevators - and when one finally gets to your floor it is likely to be full. I made use of stairs but be forwarded if you travel with heavy luggage you aren't willing to carry.
"The lobby experience makes this place"
Were I to assess the lobby, I'd give it 5 stars. Were I to assess our room, I'd give it 3 stars. My rating averages to 4 stars. We checked in to the hotel, which is perfectly situated inside the Loop, on a Friday evening, just missing the hour long complimentary sparking wine service in the lobby. The hotel is on Randolph Street within a block and a half from the Washington/Wells L stop or the Clark/Lake L stop. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and most of the well-known theaters are very close. Our check-in was pleasant and efficient and we were on our way to Room 505. Corridors are on the dark side, probably because of the design decisions to try and create an art deco look (the elevator lobbies are particularly dark due to the dark walls and dark ceiling). Our room was very small, but adequate for a comfortable king bed. The bathroom was also small and the sink almost seemed like an after-thought, positioned on a very narrow shelf. The oddest thing about the room, though, was the window, or should I say, the glass panel that was placed on the wall. While it looked like a window, it was just a clear glass panel that barely allowed even a dark view of some short of a dark shaft into which no light penetrated. Indeed, our room had no (as in none) natural light. It was a very odd experience to be in a state of perpetual darkness inside a hotel room in such a well-respected hotel. While the room was perfect for sleeping due to the darkness (and the comfortable bed), all electric lights had to be turned on during the daytime. But, we found an answer to the darkness - the wonderful lobby experience. The lobby is filled with natural light, high ceilings, beautiful finishes, and many comfortable seating and conversation areas. And, the lobby is often inhabited by the assortment of canines who welcomed into the hotel with their owners. There is free coffee and tea in the mornings and sparkling wine served to guests from 5-6pm each evening. The lobby experience is what makes this hotel, not the guest rooms. I might choose to stay here again should I return to Chicago, but it would be because of the lobby experience, not the guest room.
