Over Allegro Hotel

"Not great for business"
I am staying for two nights now. And as I have woken early (still on London time) and as I have to wait before I can get a coffee (to their credit they offer coffee and tea in their Lobby in the mornings - but no in room coffee and tea making facilities and, to my absolute shock, no room service option), I figured I will write this. I'm here for 2 nights for business and I guess my PA booked this because it is very close to the office. I will struggle through the second night, but this will go off acceptable hotels for Chicago stays in future. It didn't start well right from the airport. My colleague and I sailed through the "carry on luggage" immigration check point so well (well done Chicago airport for having such a great initiative - getting to skip the whole baggage claim area is such a brilliant idea). We were through in minutes. I had a confirmation for a hotel pick up in my travel pack and we searched for my name card, to no avail. So we found the hotel number and rang them. It seems, despite the hotel transfer confirmation number, the hotel said the car had not been arranged because no credit card details had been provided. Strange. So they unilaterally decided that there would be no car waiting. My PA confirmed no credit card details had been requested, by the way. Fine. We jumped in a cab and about 20 minutes in I get a call from a Limo driver who said he was waiting for me to call him to go to the arrivals area. I explained that I hadn't been given his details or these instructions and, indeed, the hotel had confirmed that no car had actually been booked so we had gotten a taxi. He apologised and said he would take the matter up with the hotel. Now to their credit, the staff member at reception (who was very pleasant and friendly) did apologise for the mix up. That isn't, though, my major problem with the hotel. The room is dark, small and dusty. The bathroom is tiny and has one of those small narrow baths, which means you can't avoid touching the shower curtain when you shower. A pet hate of mine. The room heating is a challenge. It is either too cold or too hot and stuffy (even if you adjust the thermostat by only one degree). My colleague shared the same problem with his room. There is no warm duvet on the bed, so keeping it cold and getting under the covers while you sleep isn't even an option. The room seemed dusty and the wardrobe, instead of having one hanging rod across, has two shorter ones (going from back to front), which means to hang clothes you have to enter into the dusty wardrobe and hang your clothes against the wall - while being knocked by the ironing board handing on the door. We tried the restaurant which was average. My tortellini was quite tough. So I will struggle through my second night, eat outside the restaurant and not be staying here again. And still I'm hanging out for my morning coffee. Just a few more minutes...
"Classy Hotel, Nightly Champagne Socials"
Disclaimer: I love Kimpton Hotels. I've stayed at six altogether. I love how they each reflect the city they occupy. Allegro Chicago is classy. What's not to like about nightly champagne socials? We met so many people at those events. The rooms are large for a city such as Chicago. The temperature hovered around 0° the six days we were in Chicago and it was a pleasure to return to the Allegro.
An interesting twist on art deco furnishings augments our awesome Allegro experiences. The downtown location is prime, the service is unsurpassable, and the rooms are quiet and delightfully decorated. Enjoy the wine hour from 5-6. although we hope they serve more than bubbly as they did during our long weekend. You cannot beat the Kimpton experience - we love this hotel1
"Cute, but noisy"
We chose this hotel for two reasons: a previously good experience and a Lyric Opera rate. The room and hotel are decorated nicely. The staff was friendly. HOWEVER, there were doors banging and loud revelors between 12:30 and 3:00 a.m. Sleep was allusive. Then, the noise started about 9:00 a.m. again. I suggest the hotel create some quiet floors for folks who actually want to sleep, or conversely, floors only for those who wish to enjoy Chicago's nightlife! Also, charge for internet in the room! Really?? I doubt we will stay at this hotel again.
"Nice, but not perfect"
My wife and I go to the Lyric Opera a couple times a year. This time we chose to stay at the Allegro because of easy walking distance to the opera house. Taking an early train because of a matinee performance, we arrived at the hotel a little before 10 a.m., and were pleasantly surprised we could check into our room at that time. We asked about breakfast, and were told Restaurant 312 was through the foyer and downstairs. However, the desk agent did not tell us it closed at 10:00. So, after dumping our bags and winter wear in the room, the restaurant staff directed us across the street to a Greek diner. We were also disappointed there were no options at all for in-room dining. Otherwise, room was fresh, clean, and stylish. 14th floor was very quiet, bathroom water flow was exceptional, and environment controls worked well.
