"3 star hotel. Excellent location in the heart of everything"
The Francis Marion Hotel is truly a trip back in time. The old world charm can be seen right away in the lobby. Bog comfortable couches and chairs are placed throughout the lobby area, and a snack and drink table are set up for guest to enjoy throughout the day (albeit coffee in the am). The check in was slow, but the staff was certainly pleasant. I have to say that the old world charm set a tone that did not match my check in experience. Don't get me wrong, the staff was nice, but I was expecting Southern charm I had heard so much about, and it just was not there. The bellmen were not particularly helpful either. They did not offer to carry my bag, did not even hold the door open for me. In fact, I was thinking, why are they even standing here? I asked one for directions and they did not know, and actually just said "sorry I don't know" (I would have expected something like "hold on let me find out for you") The elevators took forever throughout my three day stay. My room was very nice, and really had that old world charm. My bathroom was extremely small. I mean small enough that I could wash my hands while sitting on the toilet (sorry for the image, but you get the idea). It happens since I was on a business trip and traveling alone, this did not bother me, but if I had a family it would have been tight. The bed was very comfortable and the temperature controls were easy to use. Housekeeping will keep your room super clean, which was nice. Favorite part of the room was it was absolutely quiet. This was amazing! Rarely do I get this n a hotel. There was also high speed internet for free that allowed me to stream Netflix without issue. The gym was small, but I only needed the dumbbells and a small are to work out so I was fine. Overall my experience was fine. I would stay there again if I needed to, but would probably choose someplace new just to experience something else. I have to note, that I filled out the online survey following my stay and the manager of the hotel immediately responded to my comments, and stated he took what I said about the staff very seriously and already met with the bell hops. I think thats amazing that they took what I said seriously and are striving to be a first rate hotel.
"Nice Old Hotel"
Stayed here during a conference and really enjoyed it. You can tell that this hotel is 90yrs old, but it is well kept. I enjoyed the room even if it is a little small. Bed and pillows were comfortable. Bathrooms are small but functional. Location is great for walking to the market or restaurants. Only thing I really did not enjoy was the loud street noise. College of Charleston is directly behind the hotel and there are lots of students out at night. Also motorcycles come by several times a night with extremely loud exhaust pipes. I would recommend staying here if only to have a chance enjoy an old Charleston style hotel.
"great staff, not so great for the rooms"
we stayed at the Francis Marion because my husband was attending a conference there. I knew it would be quaint(old). The lobby is beautiful, the staff very friendly and helpful. Do not get a room on the main road if possible. It is soooo loud at night we were on the 7th floor and since the hotel is old all sound carries. Our neighbors were also loud, after midnight, had to call security and they came intermediately and the problem was solved so I am grateful for that. We would not stay here again due to street noise and tiny bathroom. when we opened the bathroom door it hit the bed.
"Cozy historic hotel with good service."
Well, I've had bigger rooms in Tokyo business hotels, but our "king" room had all the necessaries, as did the bathroom (which was a pretty tight squeeze, too). The hotel is due to shut down for a couple of years for a complete renovation, and none too soon. Maybe then the doors won't stick! The restaurant, which we only tried for breakfast, was too easily overwhelmed by tour groups, and the adjacent Starbucks was a much better bet, if you weren't looking for a big breakfast and weren't willing to wait. Otherwise, the hotel staff were pleasant, polite, and helpful, and the attached garage ($22/night) was very convenient and the hotel is conveniently situated for sight-seeing and shopping -- and evidently rather less expensive than the competition. You wont go wrong if you stay here, but there are much better (if pricier) options in town.
"Top notch hotel."
Elegant old hotel. Excellent staff. Helpful, energetic, took care of everything Nice room, we had a great view, really comfortable bed. Quiet and comfortable. Walking distance to downtown. Will would definitely stay here again.
