Over Francis Marion

"Great but needs a revamp "
Lovely people, lovely location but rooms and bedding need an overhaul. Flat pillows are never a thumbs up and the bedding had holes in. Walls had been repainted too many times and looked like they needed re-plastering. Bathrooms were crazily old fashioned in terms of plumbing and things didn't work. Very plasticky in places and drain holes stank. I was scared of cockroaches crawling up them. It is a city of cockroaches I have to say. Very clean so I don't get why there are so many. This said... it is a very beautiful city so I can see why it is of interest to all ;-) So... why so may stars... Staff were beautifully kind people. Teenagers doing the bell hop work were hard working and just well, totally employable and a joy to say hello to each morning No one is begging for tips. We gave them freely but at the same time we did not feel that the staff were manipulating us for tips. People were genuine and Charleston was a breath of fresh air because of their kind attitude. The lobby is absolutely beautiful. Nothing short of elegant and stunning. Air con worked well and rooms were quiet. Good management over all. Lovely guests and a very pretty place to stay.
"Nice classic historic hotel"
I love old classic hotels and their ambiance. This was my second stay here. The Francis Marion is lovely and the king room was large including a sitting area. Plenty of amenities. The bathroom was small and had a hot water pressure issue, but we worked around that. The hotel is in a good location with lots of nearby restaurants and shops. I'd come back again.
"Weekend Visit For Wedding"
Maybe my expectations were too high when I booked the reservation. We attended a Saturday wedding at the FM and planned to stay in Charleston for the eclipse on Monday. Our room was so small it should come with a warning label. I have had larger hotel rooms in Japan - a place notorious for space frugality. The bathroom was a huge disappointment. Space confined and dated fixtures. Air conditioner was noisy and labored. Some front desk staff were rude. Restaurant was unbelievably bad. 30 minute wait for breakfast because they only had two servers on the weekend of freshman check in at College of Charleston and the eclipse. Lunch service was horrible. Servers never asked how our food was prepared. Servers seemed very under trained. Going into the restaurant felt like going into a universe of mismanagement. There were many small details that screamed mismanagement throughout the place. Example - the fruit laden water next to the check in desk which was perpetually void of water. On the plus side, the valet operation and the bags to and from the room piece worked well. Because the hotel room was so small -- and the amenities so dysfunctional -- we left after one night and returned home.
Perfect location for Charleston visit. The staff was so helpful and nice and everything was very reasonably priced. We had a very large group staying at the hotel for a wedding. The reception was held at the hotel as well and everyone had a wonderful time.
"Stayed for two nights in August 2017"
This is a stylish graceful hotel with a lovely spacious historic lobby, and great air conditioning throughout. The parking is $17 next door in covered multi storey area or $22 if you use valet parking. The hotel is centrally located and easy to walk for 10-20 mins into the beautiful historic district. It's terribly hot and difficult to walk anyway really! It was105f in the shade. Our room 730 was small but comfy however the bathroom was really tiny. It was a quiet corner room although even on floor 7 you can hear the noise of the cars on the street. The wifi was very good. Big flat screen TV and excellent coffee machine in room. We were happy here and thought Charlston to be a stunning place but I doubt we would stay here again. The swamp fox restaurant was expensive for average food. We didn't have breakfast.
