"A very nice olde world hotel"
This is a very nice sizeable hotel in a very central location. Nicely decorated with very friendly staff. The welcome at reception was exceptional a real southern welcome. Close to all the sights the rooms are well decorated and proportioned. I stayed at this hotel last over a decade or so ago and I am so glad that I decided to return on this trip. Very much recommend and whilst not cheap is very reasonable for Charleston.
"OLD - terrible bathroom; too expensive"
We just got back from a wedding weekend in Charleston and stayed at the Francis Marion. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel. It is old, yes, we knew that. Many wedding guests stayed at the Dewberry, which was a bit more expensive, but it turns out very much worth the extra but of money. The common areas of FM are nice, including the hallways outside of the rooms. Old, but nice and well kept. However, you enter the room and it's old, furniture is dated and dinged up, although the beds are pretty comfortable and seemed newer. The TV was just fine. BUT, THE BATHROOM - if you can call it that. AWFUL. Barely one person can fit in it. Not to be too graphic, but when sitting down on the toilet, one's knees should not hit the (very small one-person) sink at the same time one's arm is able to rest on the side of the tub. Yes, that small. And, the shower didn't work well, it was dark, no vent or fan. The windows - may as well have not been there for sound. From the 3rd floor, you can hear normal conversations on the street below. Just guess what the St. Patrick's Day parade sounded like. We even splurged for the suite. Waste of money. Just an adjacent sitting room (with extra TV) is the difference. Maybe if you have another guest for the sofa (didn't check if it was a sleeper), it may be worth it but I can't imagine sharing that bathroom with even more people. For this kind of money, I would have expected much, much more. We didn't try any spa, etc. services so can't comment on them. Too nice outside and loved walking around beautiful Charleston! The Francis Marion staff was incredibly nice and helpful - we certainly can't fault our experience to them. Around the same area, there's a Courtyard, Embassy Suites (looks like a pink castle) and others. The Dewberry is very nice also, but a bit (not much) more expensive and if you are paying for FM, pay the extra for Dewberry. It's like the opposite of the FM - a converted Federal building, it's frankly ugly on the outside, but beautiful inside and the rooms are very nice. FM is a pretty old building and is just that - old. Very sad our first visit to Charleston was marred a bit by the hotel stay, but the rest of the weekend, the town, the sites, carriage ride, etc. were great and we will certainly return to visit - just not at the Francis Marion.
"Great Historic Hotel"
I was lucky enough to have a room with harbor view on 11th floor. Room is quite comfortable, although the bathroom is on the tiny side. Tashia provided great maid service. The Swamp Fox Restaurant was good value. Food was promptly served and was reasonably priced. As a woman traveling alone, I felt very secure here.
Our first stay at this hotel and will be our last. Checkin was a nightmare, front desk staff either inexperienced or just poorly trained and unable to adequately solve problems, rooms dated, crowded and poorly repaired with bad lighting and bar and restaurant understaffed so service poor. The hotel is very conveniently located so that is a plus. Beware that parking is expensive and checkin time is 4 pm IF there might be a room ready. Otherwise expect an even later time. We are disappointed this hotel didn’t live up to the reviews.
"A perfect experience"
Great location (short walk to visitors center to pick up tours), charming old hotel, really good breakfast, very helpful concierge and excellent staff. Felt like a visiting dignitary, very pleasant experience. Clean and quiet.
