We've just returned from two nights at this hotel. Luckily stopped outside despite having to turn the car around as we were facing the wrong way. A porter did help us up the tall steps at the entrance.. You ca either finc youf own parkinv spacd of pay 27 dollarx a day to have the car parked for you..we worth it. there is no lift, and an offer was made to help upto our first floor room.. BUT if you find climbing stairs difficult you may have a problem. Our FIRST room was delightful, large and two huge beds.. but after 5 minutes we realised there was a terrible humming noise which we thought came from the air con. .. we were told due to the weather recently being so hot, nothing could be done about the air con. We definitely couldn't sleep with that noise.. The hotel was near enough full so the only free room was facing the front road..and was SMALL. It certainly would be great for 1 person..in fact there was only one dressing gown in the wardrobe.. The bed was just a normal double..not the large beds we'd been used too.. Was a shame..Breakfast was free, sufficient buffet, but the room didn't have enough tables and some customers were sitting on sofas. .not good for the digestion. The hotel is central to lovely museums, restaurant s etc... We liked the style of this hotel, but was disappointed with having to change our room due to the air con noise. Personally I think we should have been asked to pay less for the room we were given....but there was no mention of it..
"Two night stay"
The hotel is within walking distance of the city centre. On the face of it, it looks quite upmarket, but on closer inspection it's in dire need of re-decorating - paint peeling on the staircase, on our room walls and bathroom walls. We had a tiny room, which only just accommodated our suitcases. The air con didn't work so the room was very warm. Breakfast room small and sometimes crowded. The staff, however, were great.
"Good Characterful Hotel"
This was our first time in Montreal. Found the hotel to be in an excellent position. Good breakfasts although the seating area is compact but service is very good. No lift because it has listed status but room was fine and clean.
"Good location but some things could be improved"
The hotel is very centric and close to public transportation. The beds were really soft and comfortable. But there is a big minus: there was a terrible sound produced by the cooling system in the room #307, it made it almost impossible to sleep. Breakfast facility is way too small for such a big hotel, so you have to wait to be seated.
"If Only the Air Conditioning Was Working"
Visited in late August. Had a couple of very nice days in Montreal while attending Bruno Mars Concert. The hotel can be hard to get to if you're approaching by car from the west side and not familiar with the streets. We parked a block away, checked in and the valet attendant came back with us to the car and manoeuvred thru the streets (due to number of one way streets and/or no left hand turns) to bring us to the front of the hotel so we could unpack luggage. The staff were friendly, accommodating and helpful. The buildings are older and no elevators as mentioned by many. Stairs aren't steep and are nice and wide, making getting up and down easy. The lay out can be a bit confusing, as being a hotel was not the original purpose. The room was a nice size with comfortable bed and furnishings. The view was limited, looking on a small alley and into adjacent apartment. As weather was still warm, it soon became apparent there was something wrong with the air conditioning and no ability to adjust controls from the room. Inquiring at the front desk, staff indicated the building is old and repurposed so heating/air conditioning was controlled centrally and they'd have someone from maintainence check. A worker was at the door within 5 minutes. He recommended ensuring the windows were closed, fiddled with a few things, felt there was a bit of air moving and temperature should improve but may take a few hours. There was no appreciable change. About 3 or 4 hours later ( now about 7PM) there was an unexpected knock at the door. The maintainence guy was back to check on us. He apologized the air conditioning wasn't working and didn't know when it may be repaired. He suggested opening the window. The temperatures were such that room was uncomfortable and interfered with sleep. The second night was only slightly less warm. Thankfully the weather in Montreal wasn't stifling during our visit. The free buffet breakfast was substantial and reasonable variety. The attendant was attentive to keep things stocked and tables cleared. There was a steady flow of guests during the breakfast hour. Similar to many establishmentsin the city, Montreal style bagels aren't the bagels offered with the breakfast fare, which is a shame. I have to qualify recommending to a friend or staying again, it would only be during cooler weather and air conditioning not required. Even then, not being able to control temperature from the room, isn't optimal. Upon checkout, staff apologized for the air conditioning, again stating the old, repurposed building made it difficult. The hotel is centrally located for shopping, museums, restaurants and entertainment; the staff are great and the price with nice breakfast included make it attractive, but the heating/air conditioning issues certainly detract and is unfortunate.
