"Scent Pumping Chemical in HVAC"
This was my third time staying at the Empress. It's my go-to retreat, I love the location, the appointments to the rooms, concierge, etc. However, this last stay I had a severe allergic reaction to a scent the Empress pumps into the HVAC system. For some reason, they thought it was a great idea to introduce a chemical and directly pump it into the lobby HVAC. This means when you enter the lobby, you are bombarded by a heavy perfume. It behooves me in this day and age that a luxury hotel like the Empress would think this was a good idea. For the next two days, I had to deal with a severe allergic reaction to the scent. I went to the concierge 3 times and let them know I was having a severe allergic reaction. They said they would "pass it along" . I am reviewing this so that people who are scent sensitive will be aware of this. I am by no means someone who has a reaction to everything. There was something that really caused a reaction and I don't want this to happen to others. I didn't let it ruin my vacation, but it really made for a miserable three days until I checked out. Very sad to see this happen to my favorite hotel, I will not be able to stay here again.
"The staff are great at insincere apologies but useless at pretty much everything else."
The Empress is a hotel that supposedly prides itself on high end service (and charges accordingly) yet I've had more personal and attentive service at a Motel 6. I checked in a little before 4 pm and was told by the concierge that my room wasn't quite ready as check in time wasn't until 4. I said that was fine and that I'd use the time to go and retrieve my luggage from my car. When I returned a little after 4, I was told that the room still wasn't available and was treated to an obsequious, insincere "sincere" apology. I asked how long the delay would be and was told it wouldn't be more than a few minutes. I decided to wait in the lobby. I sat for half an hour and still hadn't received word so I asked again, was treated to yet another "sincere" apology and was told that it would be just a few more minutes. I was supposed to attend a conference starting at 5pm so I was getting more than a little irritated. Despite the fact that I could have used a shave and a change of clothes, I decided that I'd leave my suitcase with the porter and head over to the conference room. When I attempted this, I was given a "sincere" apology (tm) and told that I'd need to give them my room number. I went back to the front desk and asked what room I was scheduled to be staying in and was sincerely apologized to and was told they didn't yet know what room I'd be getting. I let them know this was unacceptable and got a bonus sincere apology and was told it would be just a few more minutes. By this time, I needed the washroom so I set out in search of one, luggage in tow and was eventually asked by hotel staff if I needed something. I asked for directions to the nearest washroom and they said there wasn't one available to the public in the lobby but that they'd let me into the gym to use the one located there. They didn't seem to think that my having to transit a tight, winding staircase with a large suitcase would be an inconvenience of any sort. It wasn't until 5:20 PM that I received my room key along with a sincere apology. The room itself was typical of any hotel. Nothing special about it other than the fact that the power was out and the batteries in the room safe were dead. Initially, I assumed I needed to use the keycard to activate the power so I looked for a slot to insert the card into and, not finding one, then looked for a swipe pad. After flailing around like an idiot with my card for a few minutes, I gave up and called the front desk. They sent up an electrician to sort things out as well as to apologize sincerely. I finally made my way down to the conference over an hour late, and received a few snide remarks from attendees due to my tardiness. When it was done for the evening, I went back to the front desk to register my dissatisfaction. Along with a heaping helping of sincere apologies, I was offered my choice of free wifi (they charge $15 a night. Ridiculous!) or a breakfast coupon. I informed them that I was under the impression that breakfasts were already included as part of the conference but was told this was not the case. I suppose I should have double checked with the conference hosts but I assumed the hotel staff knew the details and accepted the breakfast voucher. Unsurprisingly, it turned out they were incorrect on this little tidbit of information and the conference attendees were given breakfasts but I didn't discover this until after returning home so, apart from the one free meal, I ended up paying for meals that should have been included. When I checked out, they asked for my credit card which surprised me as the room was already pre-booked on a corporate card. I proffered up my card and was charged for my stay. When I arrived home and checked my statement, I discovered that they'd overcharged me by $300 and it took three days of back and forth phone calls to get the discrepancy taken care of. At least I got a few more sincere apologies for my trouble. Don't stay here.
Our room was " out the back" which in hindsight was possibly a good thing as there was quite a bit of noise. The room itself was well appointed and clean. The look of the hotel was stunning, but had difficulty in finding our "breakfast room" . All in all pretty good considering the location, so close to everything.
"The most attentive staff I've ever experienced!"
We spent a day at the Empress on our way from Seattle to Whistler. Big family - my wife and two kids, plus my parents who are "getting up there" shall we say. The Staff was simply exceptional - treats for the kids, booked a car for us so we could visit Butchart early in the day, tracked down my mother's purse which she left behind (which was a lifesaver). The Gold lounge was awesome, serving exceptional wines and whiskeys for a terrific night cap. Huge thanks to Salam and Emily who really made our stay exceptional. Thanks, Ladies!
