"Small rooms. Charming property. Very classic."
First of all, the club in this hotel is wonderful. Excellent service and the food and beverage options are incredible. I visited when the property was under construction. I feel the guest experience for check-in could have been handled better. The Fairmont Gold club check-in seemed a bit disorganized. Rooms were wonderful, but a little small. Most likely due to this being an older property that received a modern upgrade. Q - the bar on property is really great, and the food did not disappoint.
"Disappointed in the Empress "
We arrived on a Friday afternoon to a very unconventional check-in area. It is on the side of the hotel and difficult to find. We flew into Victoria and after the drive to the hotel (about 30 minutes) I had to use the restroom once we arrived. I asked the women behind the counter where the restroom was located as my husband was taking care of the check-in process. She told me there wasn't one and it would be "easier" to go in my room. The hotel is currently under construction and do understand they are undergoing a renovation but to not have a restroom close by is ludicrous. When we finally made it up to our room which they call a King Luxury it was a huge disappointment. It was a tiny box and the bathroom was just as small. However, the decor was nice and the room was clean. The hotel is beautiful (non construction part) and in a great location for walking downtown. We are disappointed in such a prestigious hotel they have not done a proper job while undergoing a renovation.
We have loved to stay at the Empress for many years and have such good memories of bringing family and friends to stay and dine there. But several changes over the last year have completely changed our enjoyment of this hotel. For some strange reason the Bengal Lounge was closed -- we always loved to go there when we stayed at the hotel. And today we took a day trip to Victoria to bring our granddaughter to tea for her birthday. The tea is very expensive but now there is no fruit to begin the tea. The service has been reduced. No tea was poured for us at all -- we poured our own tea and milk, we had to remove a large dripping tea bag (not loose tea any longer) from the pot ourselves, and there is no gift box of tea given. The sandwiches were not as good as they used to be either. The tea room has cheap, sort of fake hotel-type new furniture -- there just isn't the same old world atmosphere anymore. Although we have been to tea probably 20+ times we will not be back. It seems as if they are cutting back on everything yet charging top prices. We loved this hotel, it probably was our favourite place to get away but it has lost it's charm. What a disappointment!
We stayed at the Fairmont Empress for our honeymoon. We were not disappointed. We were upgraded to a lovely suite! (Thanks Nathan) The property is the best location in Victoria. it's like the rest of the town was built around the hotel. Like all of the Fairmont properties it has that old historic charm to it yet with a modern twist. The Empress is known for their lovely afternoon high tea. The property also features a large sized indoor pool and gym facility. The room was beautiful we has a 2 room suite with separate lounge. The bed was amazing and the room was very fresh and modern.
Just spent 3 nights in the historic and now beautifully remodelled Empress Hotel. My expectations were exceeded as they did a fantastic job upgrading the rooms. I have also noticed the service levels are even better than you usually receive from Fairmont properties, which says a lot. Now of course, they are still under construction, but that shouldn't deter anyone from staying here. Very enjoyable stay.
