Over Harbour Lights Inn

"Adequate, but it could have been special"
The location is terrific; the porches, front and back balcony are an amazing asset; now if it had a welcoming hostess, a delicious and fresh breakfast, and accessible wifi .... it would be more than just adequate.
"Only the essentials"
We stayed for 3 nights, and while our hostess, Melinda, was friendly and informed, she was obviously just doing her job. Perhaps we were jaded by impressive experiences elsewhere, but we felt the personal touch that we were looking for in a B&B was missing. Breakfasts were OK, but just OK. A self-serve of toast, coffee, tea, juice and cereal supplemented by eggs cooked to order, if you wanted them scrambled, over easy or sunnyside - no breakfast meats, no omelet option, etc. Service was minimal. We don't think staff entered our room in the 3 nights we stayed. Need a plunger? Need more toilet paper? We were told where to find them. The wi-fi was awful, and we were told that it was pretty much our fault for having iPads and iPhones. Apparently it didn't like Apple devices. That said, the room was clean and the beds comfortable. TV service was good, the staff were friendly and cheerful, if not terribly helpful. We were on the second floor, and the stairs were nice and wide and not too steep, with easy access to both the front and back entrances. For a one-night stay, it would probably be just fine, but it lacked the warmth and hospitality we've come to expect from B&B's.
"Quaint and charming"
We stayed here one night. It was clean, quaint and charming. Our only issue was our room being at the back door was subject to the smokers chatting by that door. Breakfast is a combo of serve yourself and a cooked breakfast, should you want it. Great spot to watch the lights in the harbour at night from the front porch. Aptly named!
"Unwelcoming and Frustrating"
Our two night stay started with our host Melinda greeting us by first saying she wouldn't remember our name or how to say it (it is a 5 letter surname and quite common), then she asked my husband (non-Caucasian) where he was from (and she did not mean where in Canada). A very offensive welcome. The wifi is terrible when it is working - it cuts in and out - and if you want to download pictures, check email or do anything else using their wifi give up before you start. It is an experience in frustration. Breakfast is basic - self serve with an option of eggs made 1 of 3 ways. The jams and yogurt have plastic wrap over top and are kept in place and not for any reason that could be determined - so inhospitable and uninviting Overall an unpleasant experience and would not recommend.
We stayed for one night during a 14 night tour of Newfoundland, during which we were in 7 B&B's, on a loop between St Johns and St Anthony's. Out of all of them this was the inn that offered us a genuinely warm welcome. Many of the others were brusque and impersonal, despite the region's friendly reputation. The innkeeper was charming and her recommendations for dining and places of interest were spot on. The complimentary breakfast was generous and delicious. The room was spotlessly clean but unfortunately the bed was too firm for our comfort.
