Over Westmark Baranof

I visit Juneau often and always enjoy staying here! It's in the heart of town, close to shops, bars, restaurants the water and hiking trails! The hotel and staff are lovely and always greet you with a warm welcome! The hotel feels like a step back in time with its Charm and character! The Bubble Room Is quaint and a classy nice place to go for a drink.. If you get a room on the front the view is Great with the water and mountains, the back view is quaint with the local flair of homes on the hill and a gorgeous mountain. Great coffee shop just off the lobby and the the fish and chips is fantastic in the hotel restaurant! Give it a try for a memorable stay in Juneau!
This was my first visit to Juneau, AK and the natural beauty of the surrounding area is stunning. While there I stayed at the Baranof Hotel right in downtown Juneau. This is certainly not the Marriott or the Hilton but is still a comfortable stay. If you are expecting big city amenities, then Juneau as a whole is not your type of place. A little dated but overall in working order. I was a little taken back by how small the gym was but it was better than running in the rain. I would also add that the staff at the Baranof is very hospitable. I recommend coffee downstairs in the coffee shop right off the lobby, Heritage and drinks in the hotel bar. The bartender then was a great host to my visit in Juneau. Cheers
"Average at Best"
The past glory has faded badly. We were in Juneau this past Sept. The weather called for rain all week and it did!. We had to wait in line to check in and they finally got another person to help out. We were on the 7th floor facing the water and when we stepped out of the elevator it must have been 80 degrees in the hallway. Our room was small( I was sure I had reserved a deluxe room which is larger) but this room was small and very warm. I tried turning off the heat but the only thing we could do was to open the window. That was OK during the day but late night between the people that had been drinking, fighting, or yelling at the bears we did not get much rest. Another guy had met us in Juneau and he was on the backside, same floor, and said it was just as hot in his room and noisy outside. I will say the staff showed concern but they told me nothing could be done. The heating system is steam and once it is on there does not seem to be anyway to regulate the temp. I found mold in the showers and brown spots on the shower ceiling. I was able to wipe off the brown spots and mold with a little elbow grease. The Café off the lobby had a good breakfast and the wait staff did a good job. This is the 5-6th time I have stayed here but won't be going back again.
I've been traveling to Juneau for business now for 20 years. I've been there almost every month of the year. I've always had the fortunate pleasure to stay at the Baranof. I can't say it's a place for everyone in that the rooms aren't all that big, the hotel is relatively old, and the walls are thin. Having said that you may wonder what's so great about this hotel. Well, the staff are always friendly and the rooms and beds are always clean and comfortable. The rooms could stand a remodel, but it's still a great place. The Baranof is in a great location if you want to walk around downtown. It's close to everything you'd want for a visit to Juneau. Close to great hiking, restaurants and everything else you'd come to Juneau for. The airport is only about a 10 minute taxi ride and cab drivers will gladly give you a tour of anyplace in Juneau you'd care to see. Juneau is one of my all time favorite places to go in Southeast Alaska. After all these years I can't imagine staying anywhere else when I'm there.
This hotel will not win any prizes for modern, quaint, homely or particularly welcoming! Art Deco Style - rather faded glory as most of the reception rooms aren't used. We ate in the bar for instance. Quite laid back sort of service - not slick by any means. It was probably lovely at one time. We were there for a necessary night stop in Juneau before boarding our small cruise boat.
