Over Royal Kona Resort
'E Komo Mai'!

The staff at check-in were excellent to deal with. Our room had a gorgeous view of the ocean and the luau site. However, there was no roof over the atrium of our building and the floors were wet and slippery after a quick rainstorm whereupon my wife slipped and fell. As was noted by another reviewer, the carpeting in the hallways and room was filthy and there were tiny ants in the room. Location was within walking distance of tourist shopping and restaurants. The hotel restaurant was pricey but the hotel bar was absurd. Parking was not free.
"Can't wait to go back!"
We were married in Oct at the Royal Kona and while the wedding sites give golden reviews for the romance center services, I was really worried after reading reviews here. We came at the end of Ironman and also were concerned we might run into issues. We shouldn't have been! It is an older hotel but it gives you the feeling of a vintage type hawaii with the wood and tiki figures. The lanai's were spacious and the views were spectacular. We had one issue with AC not working and it was addressed immediately. The only real issue we had was the bar service was S - L - O - W most of the time we were there. The drinks and food were great tho. The Luau was fun and the food there also was good! Swimming in the lagoon is a must, water shoes make navigating the lava rock much easier. Really nice to be within walking distance to shops, bars, restaurants. The place next door had an awesome happy hour also and great bfast! Skip the hotel buffet and head there! Used the lotus center and while it might not be what I'd consider "Spa like" waiting room wise, etc - the services were fantastic. The Ali'i tower is the same tower that the bar/pool, etc are in and has a more recent renovation. Top floors facing the ocean have an incredible view. Also - for anyone considering getting married here - don't think twice. It was amazing and the Romance center works to give you the wedding of your Hawaiian dreams! We can't wait to go back for an anniversary!
"Good place to stay before and after your flights"
We flew into Kona because the airfare was hundreds of dollars cheaper than flying into Hilo for our trip to the Big Island. We love to stay Kapoho! Such a nice relaxing area to unplug and unwind. Since driving for a couple of hours after or before flying is kinda sorta sucky we decided to spend a few days in Kona before and after our week in Kapoho. The Royal Kona Resort checked most of the boxes for us. Great location, good restaurant, bar, service, on-site luau, pool, ocean swimming lagoon, and excellent views, all for a great price. The box only box that wasn't checked was upkeep. The hotel, as many in the area, is older, and could use more TLC. Good area for walking, great snorkeling if driving further out....would I pick The Royal Kona or even Kona as my only vacation spot on the Big Island - Ummm nope. But it was great for the few days before and after the flight.
The pictures are a bit misleading. I thought we'd be out of town a bit more--but happy that we could walk to lots of shops ad restaurants. We were in the Lagoon Tower (an annex to the main hotel). The room was ocean front, with a lovely balcony/lanai. From our lanai, we could see/hear the nightly luau which was interesting. The room itself was rather non-descript; it was clean, but nothing special. (very noisy air conditioning unit)
Ironman was in town. We had to stay here for 4 days. It was older but had air conditioning, good location and internet but Filthy!! I did say something and we received a nights credit. At least they tried. Most hotels, etc do not care about your experience.
